Barnsley Adult & Family Learning
Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council is the main provider of adult and community learning in Barnsley through its Adult & Family Learning Service. Local community and neighbourhood based learning is offered in venues across the borough. More learning opportunities are provided through Resource Centres, libraries and community groups. Learning opportunities are also offered in the work place, complementing work related learning made available by employers. Primary Schools
Primary Schools in Barnsley take children aged 5 to 11 years old (5 to 7 years within Infant Schools, 7 to 11 years within Junior Schools and 5 to 11 years within Primary Schools). Those schools which have an attached nursery unit have an age range of 3 to 11 years old. All Primary Schools in Barnsley fall into one of the following three categories: 1) Community: State school administered and financed by the LEA. Admission is the responsibility of the education authority. 2) Voluntary Controlled: A school established by the Church of England and jointly maintained with the LEA. Admission is the responsibility of the education authority. 3) Voluntary Aided: A school established by the Church of England or the Catholic Church and jointly maintained with the LEA. Specialist Schools and Services
Specialist Schools are for children with Special Educational Needs. There is one specialist school in Barnsley and pupils attending this school are allocated places by the Authority following a multi-disciplinary assessment of their special education needs. Barnsley Information Exchange
This information exchange and register has been set up to give disabled children/young people and their families access to information and to help those who provide services to disabled children and young people in Barnsley to plan and deliver those services.
Behaviour Support Service
The Behaviour Support Service has established an integrated education support service for pupils in need of education other than at school. This service is managed by the Head of the Behaviour Support Service and co-ordinated from the Springwell Centre. Pupils out of school because of medical needs, mothers of school age, permanently excluded pupils and other pupils unable to access school based education can receive support through the Service.
Bullying
Children's services in Barnsley can provide support and advice to children who are being bullied, or to parents or carers of a child being bullied. We recognise that life can be a misery for any young person who is subjected to any form of bullying. Exerting power through the intimidation of others is not acceptable. Forms of bullying may include verbal teasing, racism, physical confrontation and/or attacks, theft or destruction of property and isolation (being sent to ‘Coventry’ and marginalised. Young people may also be susceptible to forms of bullying/intimidation/abuse via forms of modern technology eg mobile phones, the internet via gaming, social networking, chat and internet messaging. Consequently it is important that parents are aware of what sites their children are accessing on the internet and are able to talk to them openly about what they are accessing but monitor the responses of their children to the interactions they are involved in. Dearne Enterprise Centre
Here at the Dearne we offer a range of courses and services such as job search, Information, Advice and Guidance, ECDL, Craft, Adult numeracy and literacy, Spanish, Cookery, Learn Direct, Tai Chi, Digital photography, sugar craft and Sign language. Some courses have a small fee but many people may be entitled to enrol without paying if they receive one of the following benefits Job seekers allowance Income support Asylum seekers/refugee Housing benefit Council tax benefit Working families tax credit Disabled person tax credit Pension guarantee credit An unwaged dependant of a person in reciept of any of the above. There is also FREE on site child care for children aged 6 weeks to 8yrs at Dearne Ducklings if their parents or carers are accessing the Dearne Enterprise centre. L'ecole de Langues
L'ecole de Langues provide one-to-one tuition in French, German, Italian and Spanish. Any age welcome. Please contact the provider for cost details.

Pre-School Learning Alliance - Barnsley
Support pre-school groups across the borough. Promotes development and learning for children aged 0-5 years. Also lone-parent project which offers support advice and training for people bringing children up on their own. Organizes childcare training in partnership with community learning. The PLA has an answerphone that is available out of hours.
